A qualified applicant will receive a scholarship for half of the registration fee for a permaculture design charrette to be held at Wind & Sun Farm in the Town of Clay Banks June 29 – July 3.
The hands-on training, known as a design charrette because of its intensity and its problem-solving nature, will be conducted by Midwest Permaculture, an organization whose purpose is to “support the transition of our society from a culture of consumption into a culture of creation” through educational events and opportunities.
Permaculture is a holistic approach to land use design, based on ecological principles and patterns, integrating land with people and characterized by minimal work, re-use of wastes, increased productivity, and environmental restoration. Its concepts were developed by Australian Bill Mollison beginning in the 1970’s and advanced by his colleague, David Holmgren, with the publication in 2002 of Permaculture: Principles and Pathways beyond Sustainability.
The preferred scholarship applicant will have a confirmed interest and experience in sustainable practices, local sustainable agriculture, permaculture, and/or transitioning to an oil independent society. Applicants must be residents of Door County and have access to land in Door County that will be used as a case study during the charrette. It is expected that concepts learned during the charrette will then be applied to this land upon completion of the charrette.
