He was the kid who was lightning fast on any and every video game, back when Missile Command was all the rage. Somehow, John managed to trademark never, ever wearing a coat, hat or gloves all winter, and that was when we had real winters in Door County. John was apparently operating on a different frequency level, comfortable in jeans and a white, cotton, short-sleeved t-shirt, despite sub-zero temps.
John M. Hollister, 49, Fish Creek, passed away at home, Tuesday August 26, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 18, 1959 in Evanston, IL, the son of Richard and Gloria Hollister. In 1968 the family moved to Door County where John attended and graduated from Gibraltar High School. John went on to attend The University of Stevens Point, The University of Milwaukee, and Milwaukee Area Technical College with his focus on studies in the hotel/restaurant industry.
John’s career was spent as chef, cook and manager at various clubs and restaurants, most recently in Madison, where he lived until his illness. John’s greatest joy in life was the love for his son Colin and the closeness he shared with his family. John always enjoyed great intellectual challenges, and will be remembered for his quick wit and intellectual sparring. He was a huge fan of trivia and crossword puzzles, a great sports fan, with an ever-watchful eye on his favorite team, the Brewers.
Survivors include his son Colin Hollister, father Richard Hollister, stepmother Kathy Hollister, brothers Rick Hollister (children Devin, Elliot, Samantha and Connor), Tom (wife, Pam) Hollister (daughters, Jennifer and Jessica) sisters Carol (husband, Keith) Kuchar (sons, Joey and Trajan) Ann Polomis (Quin Gamble) (daughters, Molly (Eric) Rockwell, Abby and Elly Polomis) Ruth (husband, Dick) Carpenter (children, Baily and Austen) one great nephew Leo Rockwell, and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his Mother, Gloria Hollister and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
