The Door Community Auditorium kicks off its 2011 concert season with a performance by acclaimed singer-songwriter Mason Jennings at 7 pm on Saturday, May 7.
Jennings’ concert, which will also feature the neo-acoustic quintet Elephant Revival, is the first of a season that promises to be the Auditorium’s most diverse and satisfying season yet.
Mason Jennings blends the personal insights of a poet, the political punch of a protest singer, and the musical variety of a jazz musician with the passion of a rock and roller. Jennings’ magnetic performances have earned him a loyal cult following, selling over 100,000 copies of his first two CDs without major label publicity. Eight albums later, Jennings is still winning fans with his catchy melodies, intimate lyrics, and distinct voice.
Critics have hailed the Minnesota-based Jennings as “one of the best-kept secrets in pop music.”
Jennings will be joined at the DCA by Elephant Revival, a modern folk quintet whose innovative sound is firmly rooted in tradition. Elephant Revival uses a variety of instruments, including washboard, banjo, viola, guitar, and saw, to interpret a vast repertoire of material, including Scottish/Celtic fiddle tunes, original folk pieces, traditional ballads, psychedelic country, indie rock, powerful reggae grooves, 1940s jazz standards, and hip-hop beats.
Tickets for the May 7 show, which begins at 7 pm, range from $22 to $35 and can be purchased in person at the Door Community Auditorium on Highway 42 in Fish Creek, on the phone at 920.868.2728, or online at www.dcauditorium.org. The performance is sponsored by the Door County Half Marathon/Nicolet Bay 5K.
