While voters may not agree on which candidate in an election should get their vote, most agree that the system of campaign financing in the United States is broken. They might be surprised to learn not only how this system emerged, but also that we are the only major democracy that does not provide free air time to candidates. Increasingly citizens wonder whether the financing of election campaigns fairly can ever be accomplished.
Mike McCabe, Executive Director for the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, will explain the developments leading to the current situation in Wisconsin as well as the status of current reform proposals. The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign is a nonpartisan political watchdog group founded in 1995 that tracks the money in state politics and advocates for campaign finance reform, election integrity, media democracy, ethic reform, open government, judicial independence and other democracy reforms.
