The Sturgeon Bay Skatepark Initiative (SBSI) is working in partnership with the City of Sturgeon Bay Parks and Recreation Department to establish a public skatepark in Sturgeon Bay.
Design plans (above) for the proposed 10,000 square foot park were developed by Grindline Designs of Seattle, Washington and are available for viewing at the YMCA, BayLake Bank and Glas, the Green Coffeehouse.
All who are interested in the skatepark are invited to attend a “Friends of the Skatepark” meeting at the Sturgeon Bay branch of the Door County YMCA on Thursday, October 4 at 6:30 pm. Items to be addressed at the meeting include an overview of the project design and budget, updates on fundraising progress, upcoming fundraising opportunities, interim skating opportunities and plans for community outreach including skateboarding classes for new skaters.
According to Laurel Hauser, co-chair for SBSI, the newly-formed “Friends of the Skatepark” will meet on a monthly basis. “We have a very committed group of parents, students and community leaders involved in the project. We’d like to broaden and formalize that support to ensure the success of the building stage and to look beyond it to how the skatepark can be a positive addition to the larger Door County community. All who are interested in any aspect of skateboarding/BMX biking are encouraged to attend.”
More information about the ongoing efforts of SBSI and the interim skate space is available by contacting co-chairs Matt Dixner Young at 920.559.6880 or Laurel Hauser at 920.493.0572. SBSI is a fund of the Door County Community Foundation.
