Birch Creek continues a tradition of excellence with the upcoming fall concert, “I Get A Kick Out of Cole,” featuring Cynthia Stiehl, mezzo soprano and Judith Jackson, piano on Saturday, October 22, in Juniper Hall.
In a 1930’s style dinner party setting, concertgoers will enjoy a concert comprised of the familiar works of Cole Porter. Doors open at 5:30 pm for social time, cash bar and canapés. Dinner, based on a 1930’s menu from the Waldorf Astoria hotel, will be served at 6 pm followed by the concert. Desserts complete the evening. Cynthia Stiehl, mezzo soprano is delighted to return to Juniper Hall for an evening of Cole Porter classics. Known for her recitals of American art song, opera and musical theater, Ms. Stiehl’s repertoire extends from Bach to Gershwin and beyond. She has appeared as guest soloist with symphonies, choirs and ensembles in Florida, Massachusetts, Oregon and Wisconsin. Door County audiences are familiar with Ms. Stiehl’s numerous benefit performances for local non-profit organizations including Birch Creek, Peninsula Music Festival, Door County YMCA, Hardy Gallery and Wisconsin Historical Society.
As a proud graduate of Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Ms. Stiehl performed the inaugural recital in Vail Hall at Bjorklunden. She has performed Samuel Barber’s Dover Beach and Aaron Copland’s American Songs. She has premiered works by Richard Cumming, which were written especially for her. Ms. Stiehl has several CD’s to her credit, most notably her memorable recital with John Browning recorded at Bjorklunden. She collaborates frequently with pianist Judith Jackson.
Judith Jackson is a pianist, accompanist and vocal coach. She was formerly principal pianist of Chicago Opera Theater, the national auditions pianist of the San Francisco Opera and the auditions pianist for the MacAllister International Opera Competition. The Metropolitan Opera engaged her to judge its regional and district final auditions in Denver, Colorado. In Door County, where she permanently resides, Ms. Jackson is a member of the Peninsula Music Festival (PMF) Orchestra and as the newly-named PMF Choral Coordinator, has prepared a local chorus for performance in several PMF seasons. Throughout her career, Ms. Jackson has collaborated in many instrumental and vocal recitals to benefit non-profit organizations. Birch Creek holds a special place in her heart for the positive teaching atmosphere it affords young musicians.
