The Stage Door Theatre Company, the professional theatre troupe in residence at the Third Avenue Playhouse presents its first production of the 2013 summer/fall season, Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie.
This production will feature an original musical score by its director James Valcq, composer of The Spitfire Grill and the current American Folklore Theatre production of Victory Farm. The cast includes veterans of both Stage Door and Door Shakespeare: Ryan Schabach as Tom Wingfield, Kay Allmand as his sister Laura, and Ryan Patrick Shaw as Jim O’Connor, the Gentleman Caller. Claire Morkin rounds out the cast in the role of Amanda Wingfield, the mother of Tom and Laura.
The Glass Menagerie was Williams’s first popular success and launched the brilliant career of one of America’s finest playwrights. Since its premiere in Chicago in 1944, with the legendary Laurette Taylor in the role of Amanda, the play has provided a bravura role for great actresses from Jessica Tandy to Joanne Woodward, and has been performed continuously since its premiere in theatres around the world. A brand new Broadway production is planned for this coming fall. More than fifty years after telling his story of a family and the memory of one particular time in their lives, Williams’s mellifluous voice still resonates deeply and universally with humor and pathos.
No play in the modern theatre has so captured the imagination and heart of the American public as Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie.
