The Door County Renaissance Faire is a fun and educational event that the whole family can enjoy, providing interactive demonstrations and hands-on learning experiences in a beautiful natural woodland setting.
Noble Cause Jousters
The 3rd Annual Door County Renaissance Faire is all set to be the best yet with the return of favorite performers that include the Noble Cause Jousters, Juggling Gypsy Geoff, and 3 Pints Gone. You will also be graced by Queen Catherine, King Edward and their Royal Court. Many new walk-around and stage performers are also on the schedule this year.
Patrons of all ages have an opportunity to enjoy jousting, juggling, battles, blades, royals and rogues while learning about Renaissance weaponry, dance and fashion. Families may cheer on their favorite armored knights and enjoy shopping for treasures in a unique tented marketplace before tackling period treats like a giant turkey leg or a mug of ale.
The Faire runs for 2 consecutive weekends: June 30 – July 1 and July 7 – 8 with hours from 10 am until 6 pm on Saturdays and 10 am until 4 pm on Sundays. It will once again take place on a private farm just one mile north of Carlsville at 5226 Monument Point Road. Tickets are at very family friendly rates of $12 for adults (16 – 59), $9 for youth (5 – 15) and seniors (60+). Children 4 and under are free.
The Royal Court and some of the entertainers will also being making special appearances around the county in the week in between the two Faire weekends. You may see them in the Door County 4th of July parades, or at the FFA Dairy Breakfast. Expect to see them in downtown Sturgeon Bay at selected businesses such as Door County Candy for First Fridays on July 6. Hear the high energy Celtic music of 3 Pints Gone on Saturday, June 30 from 7 – 10 pm at Kitty O’Reilly’s (also in Sturgeon Bay ).
For the organizers of the Faire there is much more at stake than maidens and mead, dragons and knights. The primary mission of the Door County Renaissance Development Group, Inc. is reaching out to disadvantaged or at risk youth to provide positive role models and mentors for them throughout the year, not just during the 2 weekends of the Faire. Proceeds raised from this event will provide for the development of educational programs in Door County public schools and libraries. The Faire is also collaborative effort with other not for profit and civic organizations in providing a venue for them to raise funds and awareness for their groups.
Fairies Tib and Firemoon demonstrate a balancing act
According to Sandy Stetler, one of the event’s organizers, the impacts for Door County residents are far reaching, and have a great impact for an area so dependent on tourism. As the Faire has grown in size, scope and popularity, so has its reach outside the immediate Door County area.
“We have people coming from all over Wisconsin as well as all of the surrounding states and from as far away as St. Louis , specifically to attend this Faire,” Stetler says. “And, when they come up, they tend spend extra time here. They stay in the hotels and resorts. They eat at the restaurants and visit the shops.”
“We’d like to see as many people come out as possible. We try to have something for everyone, from locals to tourists,” Stetler says. “It is important that everyone have a good time at the Faire. And of course , as with all non-profit groups and special events, we would of course welcome additional sponsors, donors or volunteers. Strap on your sword or hammer, lace up your bodice or boots and come join us if you can!”
