DKBEP High School Home Construction Program Hits The Road!
2009/2010 Project in Kewaunee County
Twelve high school students representing Algoma and Luxemburg Casco School Districts will have the opportunity to construct a student-built home during the 2009/2010 academic year in Kewaunee County. The two school districts have joined forces with the Door Kewaunee Business & Education Partnership (DKBEP), Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) and Kewaunee County Economic Development Corporation (KCEDC) in an effort to grow the local skilled workforce while providing real-world learning experiences for our area youth.
For the past two years, the program has been implemented in Sturgeon Bay with homes constructed by high school students. Because of its success, the program will pack up its tool trailer and head south for the 2009/2010 academic year, to offer the opportunity to students in the neighboring county.
Breaking ground in September 2009, the DKBEP High School Home Construction Program will give Kewaunee County students a hand in the construction of a new home from the ground up under the watchful eye of NWTC contracted instructor, Miles Zastrow.
“These students are receiving a rare hands on experience,” says Zastrow. “They get an opportunity to work with the best; a skilled group of local contractors. When the program concludes, they are hopefully given opportunities for jobs or continue their education. It gives them a very good foundation to build upon.”
Each student will earn 16 advanced credits for placement in the Wood Tech Certificate program at NWTC at the end of the school year.
About The Home: The single story, 1,700 square foot ranch style home located in Luxemburg, will feature three bedrooms which includes a master suite, two full bathrooms, three stall garage and a full basement with natural light. Other amenities include: a gas fireplace, first floor laundry, 9 foot ceilings, open concept design and a sliding glass door that opens to a deck. In May 2010, when completed, the home will be for sale on the open real estate market. All revenue generated from the home sale will cover program costs and any remaining will be used as seed money towards future DKBEP High School Home Construction projects.
The DKBEP is looking for additional support from the community. Local building subcontractors are encouraged to participate by taking the time to teach students their trade. Also, any interested home buyers may have the opportunity to customize the home with finishes of their choosing.
