As part of an ongoing mission to foster Door County’s historic Sturgeon Bay as a creative hub for the performing arts the Holiday Music Motel’s Creative Director, pat mAcdonald introduces “Thursday Writer’s Night.”

Rick Younglove encourages local songwriters, poets, comedians and authors to come out of their closets and join with him on Thursdays. As a gifted musician, writer and humorist, Younglove will host and mentor “Writer’s Night” on the first three Thursdays of each month in the newly renovated lounge/lobby of the motel from 7 – 10 pm (sign-up at 6:30pm). Individuals of any age and at all levels of talent and experience are enthusiastically welcomed. It’s free to participate and free to simply attend.

You may bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. The Holiday Motel will serve complimentary coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Discounted rooms are offered to anyone attending the event from afar.

“Most open mics focus primarily on songs, but I want to open this up to spoken-word and comedy,” says Younglove. “There’s a lot of talent around here needing an outlet.”

“Getting a chance to play for a real listening audience inspires and motivates writers to come up with new stuff,” says pat mAcdonald. “Even if it’s just playing for each other, the exposure has a positive effect on the work. In the future, we plan on working with area schools and galleries to incorporate the visual arts into the future of the Holiday as well.”

“Writer’s Night” will be held at the Holiday Music Motel on the first three Thursdays of each month. Fresh material can be debuted, tested and refined in front of a receptive audience of peers, community members and hotel guests. On the last Thursday of each month the event will migrate to Andy’s Nautical Inn, at 123 Kentucky Street in Sturgeon Bay where the strongest performances of the past 3 weeks will be invited to perform their material for a larger audience. Those selected to perform will be awarded Nautical Inn gift certificates. Andy Mueller, chef and owner of the newly renovated Nautical Inn is enthusiastically receptive to hosting the monthly events.

Marybeth Mattson, Holiday Motel management team member adds, “In addition to being a place that cultivates creativity, we also want to be a place where the community feels welcome and at home. We want everyone to come in, take a look around and feel include us as an integral part of the Sturgeon Bay performing arts community.”
