Winter Dream by Charles L. Peterson

Natural light streams through the windows of Cottage Row Framing & Gallery. The whitewashed walls of the 100-year-old barn serve as the perfect canvas for exhibiting artwork. It is against this backdrop that the gallery features the paintings of renowned artist Charles L. Peterson during a special “Memorial Weekend One-Man Show.”

A Door County resident since 1973, Peterson has established an international reputation for his paintings and limited edition prints. A Marietta College professor and department head for 20 years, Peterson applied his classical training to genre painting. His brush strokes illuminate the lives of ordinary people doing ordinary things, most often in historical settings.

Peterson’s interest in nature — particularly the water — is evident throughout his work. As a lifelong sailor, the Great Lakes and the sea in general have been a dominating theme in his paintings and illustrations. In 1983, Peterson was recognized for his sea-themed painting with an invitation to participate in Mystic Maritime Museum Gallery’s first International exhibit. The most distinguished maritime art gallery in the nation also selected one of Peterson’s seafaring-themed watercolors for inclusion in Mystic Maritime’s 30^th Annual Exhibit last year.

Recipient of numerous awards, this Ephraim artist has twice won the Mystic Maritime’s prestigious Thomas M. Hoyne Award in their International Art Competition. Distinguished by them as a “Modern Marine Master,” Peterson is also listed among their “Top Ten Most Popular Artists” in the nation’s print industry. His prints are featured in two books, “Of Time and Place” by Sigurd Olson and his own “Charles L. Peterson: Reflections.”

The Memorial weekend show will include a special “meet the artist reception” on Saturday, May 29, from 10 – 1 pm. Peterson will be available to sign books and visit with guests. Twenty-two new Peterson paintings of varying themes will be unveiled during this event. The new works which are smaller in size will include watercolors, pencil drawings, and ink and gouache. Peterson’s note-cards will also be available for purchase. Refreshments will be served during the artist’s reception.

In addition to Charles L. Peterson, Cottage Row Framing & Gallery features Wisconsin artists Jack Anderson, Kay McKinley Arneson, Bridget Austin, Michael Bond, Jim Davel, Marianne Diekman, Malin Ekman, Kathy Glasnap, Mary Johnson, June Maeder, and Mark VanderVinne.

Cottage Row Framing & Gallery will continue its schedule of “meet the artist” events this summer with Jack Anderson, “Door County Seasons” on Saturday, July 10, followed by “Treasures & Travels” featuring Bridget Austin on Saturday, July 31.

Cottage Row Framing & Gallery is located ½ mile south of Fish Creek in the big red barn at Orchard Country Winery & Market. In the early 1970’s Door County experienced the opposite of a “brain-drain.” Lots of talented young people decided – for any number of differing reasons – to set sail from all parts of the world to come and settle in Door County. It was an unusual influx, one that brought in a wave of new ideas  and energy.

Two of those people, an 18-year old summer-job waitress  and her handy-man boss, the young manager of the White Gull Inn met back in 1972. For three years they worked together, fell in love, married and eventually became owners of this historic country Inn. For almost 40 years they have worked to restore and expand the dining and hospitality services of the White Gull – and managed to raise two adult daughters.

Last week, Andy and Jan Coulson, their day-chef Julie Zak and the entire staff at the White Gull Inn were recognized – not only by winning top honors on ABC’s Good Morning America TV show – but also by the wave of support from fans all over the country that took the time to vote for them and help spread the word in an online election to pick America’s Best Breakfast.

I was there, camera-in-hand for two days, recording the event, not knowing on day one, that I would return the following morning to witness the crowning of a champion. As an emerging filmmaker, with a shoestring budget, I edited down the embedded video (above) and want to share it with the viewers of Door County Style as an early-release, in order to share some of the behind-the-scenes experiences of two of my oldest Door County friends, winning some well-deserved recognition. Freecycle Yahoo Group...

The Door County, Freecycle Group (currently with 145 members) is open to all who want to “recycle” that special something rather than throw it away. Whether it’s a chair, a fax machine, piano or an old door, feel free to post it. Or maybe you’re looking to acquire something yourself! We urge you to support Feed and Clothe My People of Door County, Bargains Unlimited in Sister Bay, Goodwill Donation Center located at Sunshine House in Sturgeon Bay, or other nonprofit groups as your first option for giveaways.

This Freecycle group matches people who have things they need to get rid of with people who can use them.  Our goal is to keep usable items out of the landfill.  By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth.  Another benefit of using Freecycle is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process.  Free your inner pack rat!
