Six years after its launch, The Kewaunee Academy of Fine Art under the direction of Norma Bell is moving operations from Kewaunee to Algoma.

The school will be located in a new facility in the Lake Michigan shoreline town of Algoma, 12 miles north of Kewaunee. The move will be completed just in time for the commencement of the 2010-2011 school year which begins August 31.

Previous to the move, the Academy was located in a grand old refurbished dairy barn in Kewaunee.

“We have all cherished and enjoyed our residence at the ‘Big Barn’. However, it is time to open the second chapter of the Kewaunee Academy of Fine Art and this move will facilitate a new era.” says Norma Bell, Owner, Manager, and Executive Director.

The new Algoma location at 316-318 Steele Street, is a vintage 1905 brick building. The space will provide 3,000 square feet of open floor plan, 13 foot tall ceilings that have decorative tin tiles and cornices, hardwood floors and many other vintage appointments.

Craig Blietz, Artistic Director of the Academy, says “Each day we strive to improve upon what we provide to our students and this new facility presents us with another opportunity to do so. The authentic early 20th Century character inherent in the architecture of this building will infuse our curriculum and the educational experience, bringing forth the atmosphere and quality of 19th century art schools in Paris and Munich.”

With Dick Bell’s departure Norma Bell becomes the sole proprietor and administrator of the Academy. Craig Blietz remains the Artistic Director. The school will also retain the name “Kewaunee Academy of Fine Art.” The Academy will host a Grand Opening Celebration with details available soon.

Before the Grand Opening Party there will be a Moving Sale…

The Barnsite Gallery and the Kewaunee Academy of Fine Art will host a moving sale on Saturday, July 17 from 9 am to 4 pm at the current location: 109 Duvall St. in Kewaunee.

Susan Murtaugh paints on the iPod Touch’s small screens and then outputs the results to paper archivally.

Created on an iPod...

On July 12 at 7 pm the Flying Pig Gallery and Greenspace will host a return engagement with artist Susan Murtaugh, a followup to her January presentation on the digital art of finger-painting. She will explain and demonstrate how the iPad has affected her work, discuss software changes and developments and how the world of finger-painting has grown.Susan is a Graduate of the Chicago Academy of Fine Art with Majors in Illustration and Graphic Design.

She’s worked for over 35 years in design and advertising, including 14 years as owner of her own design firm. She has retired, but not stopped working and lives in the Town of Two Creeks, north of Two Rivers, on Lake Michigan, with her husband Phil and artist son, Alex.

Susan Murtaugh explains the concepts of using digital technology in her artistic work environment:

“Since early 2009 my preferred medium has dramatically changed. And it’s being used by a growing number of artists in all genres. It’s digital. Not the familiar computer digital. I draw, ‘paint,’ express myself on my iPod Touch, essentially an iPhone and my new iPad. I’ve been doing this since February, 2009.

I use the Brushes and Sketchbook Mobile apps. The effect is amazingly like painting on canvas. I start with a base layer and work up just as I would with oil or pastel. But, I use my finger and a Pogo stylus. To me the applications feel and look like my older pastel work. I’ve always loved my studio clutter but this frees me of it all. My ‘digit-alls’ are with me all the time.

Exploring this medium has excited me so that I’ve been working with Brushes developer Steve Sprang and the Canadian group, Autodesk, developing software that further enhances the experience of painting on small screens and then outputting the result archivally on paper for display.”

Attendees will also have the chance to view the international exhibit “The World at Our Fingertips,” currently on exhibit at Flying Pig Gallery and Greenspace. Susan Murtaugh, one of the participating artists, will be our special guest for the evening.

The Hardy Gallery in Ephraim, in conjunction with Friends of Gibraltar (FOG) and the Peninsula School of Art (PSA), is pleased to announce preparations for its Exposure to Creativity (ETC) program. The program is an arts mentorship for Gibraltar High School students, and will launch for the 2009/2010 season on Tuesday, October 27 and will run for a period of six weeks.

The ETC program, established in 2007, pairs the high school students of Gibraltar with experienced local artists for specialized learning in a variety of creative fields. Half-day workshops offered in past years have included digital photography, graphic design, theater/play writing, creative writing, poetry, gourmet cooking and food presentation, architecture, pottery, clothing design, landscape design, and more.

In the 2008 – 2009 ETC program, over 200 GHS students participated in two different half-day workshops taught by 23 area arts professionals both at the school and off-campus at an artist’s workshop or studio. After the workshops, evaluations were given to each of the students to assess their interest in participating in a small group mentor experience later in the school year. 13 students were matched with five appropriate mentors.

For the 2009 – 2010 school year, the ETC programs will work a little differently. Surveys completed by workshop instructors revealed a need to separate the freshman class due to the wide variance of skill levels among the students. All GHS freshmen will participate in a “sampler” of creative workshops this year (most of these taking place at the Peninsula School of Art) with the sophomore through senior students making selections for two half-day workshops similar to last year.

“We are excited to partner with the PSA in order to bring the students a better experience,” says Elizabeth Meissner-Gigstead, the Hardy Gallery’s Executive Director.

Peninsula School of Art serves adults and youth with high-caliber visual arts education experiences throughout the year. The year-round facility offers six to eight gallery exhibitions per year, seven working studios with equipment for ceramics, metal arts, photography, painting and drawing, print- and paper-making, as well as a comprehensive art resource library for education and inspiration. By partnering with the Peninsula School of Art, GHS students will become familiar with the equipment and resources that Peninsula School of Art has to offer. Students who choose to enroll in the mentoring program will have ongoing access to the professional caliber studios and equipment.

The last half-day workshop on November 17 will conclude with an all-school assembly program presented by ComedySportz, a motivational comedy group. After these workshops have been completed, the small group/mentor workshops will be formed at the beginning of 2010.

The collaboration between the Hardy Gallery, FOG, and PSA has been a vital one through the inception of the ETC program, and this year, the three organizations will expand to work with the Door County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The FOG always centers its programming on a theme, and the theme for the 2009/2010 year is Service Learning, a term that combines community service with regular classroom activity. Through the ETC program, the participants will create artwork (in collaboration with the homeowners) that will hang in the homes built by Habitat for Humanity this year.

“The county’s extensive and vibrant arts community provides the necessary support for the ETC program,” says Meissner-Gigstead. “Not only do the students benefit, but it also provides an opportunity for local artists to do educational work over the off-season. It’s a great way to align the needs of the students with the immense resources offered by our peninsula’s artists.”

The Hardy’s Exposure to Creativity program was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Hardy Gallery is a non-profit organization enriching the vibrancy of the Door County community by promoting and fostering local art.

EPHRAIM, WI - On Tuesday, November 4, Gibraltar High School students were enthralled in a myriad of creative hands-on workshops offered in collaboration with the Hardy, Friends of Gibraltar (FOG) and Gibraltar High School through the Exposure To Creativity (ETC) program.

The Exposure to Creativity (ETC) program was launched during the 2007-8 school year. The goal of the program is to provide all high-school aged students, not just those currently enrolled in school art programs, with the opportunity to develop their creative interests and to understand the value of creativity across the spectrum of all educational and career pursuits.

ETC provides our youth with access to the ample and diverse creative resources of our local arts community, and at a time—during the school day and year—when they are in school. While Saturday or summer art classes are valuable and accessible to many, any program which is embedded within the school day provides the benefit of reaching each and every student, not just those with the parental encouragement, free time and financial resources for private classes or training. The ETC program consists of two primary components: hands-on workshops that enhance the school curriculum and an arts mentor program that offers more in-depth exposure and adult guidance.

“By giving these students the opportunity to physically engage in a multitude of creative processes, we are seeing them emerge from the experience with a renewed self confidence, said Elizabeth Meissner-Gigstead, Executive Director. “The direct impact of the experiences on these students’ lives will be far-reaching.”

Students will participate in the second session of half-day workshops on Tuesday, November 18. This year, a total of 26 workshops will be presented in a variety of creative fields that include painting (pastels, oils and watercolors), fibers, photography (digital and black and white), dance (jazz and ballet), theater, poetry, sculpture, music-recording, filmmaking and fashion design.

ETC offers students the opportunity to expand their personal horizons, strengthen their academic success, and increase their potential career directions and productivity as members of a future creative workforce. It empowers young people to develop creative practices they can sustain throughout all facets of their lives.

Support for the 2008-09 program comes from the following community sponsors: Azure Menswear, the Blacksmith Inn, Chelsea Antiques, Dan Carlson & Associates, Great Lakes Yacht Services, Hide Side Corner Store, Liberty Square and Nathan Nichols & Co. Additional support has been provided in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the state of Wisconsin, Gibraltar Schools, Friends of Gibraltar, the Door County Community Foundation and private donors with in-kind support provided by the Peninsula Art School.

For more information about this and other Hardy programs, call (920) 854-2210, send e-mail to info@thehardy.org or visit www.thehardy.org.

The Francis Hardy Center for the Arts is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote awareness, understanding and appreciation of the arts through education and outreach programs, events, and exhibits.
